NATUUR

PARCO NATURALE VALLE DEL TICINO

The Park is situated to the South of Lago Maggiore where the river Ticino goes out from the lake and reaches the region Lombardia. The park is characterized by a rural landscape where visitors can see mills and farm houses. Recently the Mulino Vecchio of Bellinzago was restored. It houses permanent exhibitions and many didactical activities.

The park is made up of a valley which opens progressively towards forests and river loops. In the south, the valley widens and creates a series of gravel and river islands which are periodically submerged by floods. This area is characterized by the presence of numerous lanche. Here water flows slowly and favours the development of a rich aquatic vegetation. The park is also characterized by the presence of springs, where water maintains a constant temperature all year round allowing a rich and luxuriant vegetation. Woods occupy 60% of the park's area with traces of the original flat wood with deciduous trees like British oaks, European hornbeams and false acacia (invasive). The undergrowth is characterized by hazels, blackthorns and hawthorns. Dog's-tooth-trees, squills, periwinkles and primroses are also an important part of the park. The aquatic vegetation of the lanche with the presence of water-lilies, spatterdocks, common reeds etc. is of particular interest. Among mammals visitors can see squirrels, rabbits, hedgehogs. The park houses hares, a non autochthonous species which was put in through the repopulation in a venatorial aim. Among birds the park houses mallards, grey herons, moorhens, pheasants. Among fishes: trouts, luces and chars.
