The
construction of the sanctuary "Madonna della Riva" (Our Lady of the
Shore) is linked to a particular event: on June 27th, 1657,
when a woman was praying in front of the Madonna image claimed to have seen
the face of the Virgin crying blood. On August 10th, 1662, the works started according
to the wishes of the Archbishop Litta of Milan and under the supervision of the architect
Gerolamo Quadrio. His project was to build a church with an
octagonal plant with a face with arcades but only the choir and
presbytery were completed and were blessed in 1667. The bell tower was
built in 1735 while the present face in 1943. In the church you find the frescoes
representing the Madonna with the Child, which goes back to 1443. On the lateral
walls there are frescoes attributed to Morazzone.
