Mergozzo is the
name of the lake from which the town takes its name. It is closer to Verbano
and near the Borromeo gulf. Mergozzo lake once upon a time was integrant part of lake Maggiore.
The river Toce with its drifts, after 1800, separated the lake Maggiore from the lake of Mergozzo.
Mergozzo has several hotels and camping sites, schools of nautical ski and canoe, (if the
impetuous wind called Mergozzo does not blows) offers the possibility of doing "water"
sports like windsurf too. Before the construction of the street of Sempione, during Napoleonic
period, it was an important centre of commercial interchanges. It is worth visiting the romanic
churches of S. Marta (1500) and the parish church dedicated to the Assumption, first 1600.
Near the church you can see the poarch of 1700 called "le Cappelle" (the Chapels) and the
Antiquarium rooms (with the archaeological findings of Ossola valley and Novara). The
great stairs called "scarpia" end to the medieval castle. At about 7 km you see the
drift of marble of Candoglia that Gian Galeazzo Visconti in 1390 donated to the "fabbrica del duomo di Milano"
(the works and building of Milan Cathedral). |
