Peaceful and well preserved, discoveries testify to the fact that Velate was inhabited in Roman times, and the tower, property of Zambeletti, was constructed on Roman foundations.
During the Middle Ages it belonged to the Bianchi of Velate. The Piazza of St. Stefano is the heart of the village, with its church of late Gothic origins bearing the same name. It houses a 16th-17th century wooden crucifix.
Noteworthy is the Oratory of St. Domenico, and the 16th century Clerici House, with its Middle Age tower.
Near the cemetery on the outskirts of the village rise the ruins of the dominant tower of Velate, built in about the 11th century; each of the five floors is marked with a single window placed skin fully in the split stone-work walls.
