Famous
health- thermal resort, Baveno had its guests,
artists and politicians, as well as Umberto Giordano,
who set in music "Fedora". This little town has old origins.
The historical centre is composed of buildings, dating back to X
century, is one of the most important holiday resort appreciated by
International tourism. The settlement of men, on the south shore of
the lake, was due to the possibility of quarrying pink and red granite,
from the surrounding mountains, above all Camoscio.
The parish church, with its romanesque bell tower, was
built in XI century with stones of granite of Baveno. On the facade, there are
Roman tombstones, found in that place. Near there is the eight-sided
baptistery of paleochristian origin and remade in the period of
Renaissance. Also in Baveno there are many aristocratic villas of IX century.
Entering the town, you can note "Villa Branca" built in 1884 in Tudor style, and "Villa Fedora"
, where Umberto Giordano composed the homonymous opera.
One of the resort of Baveno, is Feriolo, a small village with an important airway
communication. From here the streets lead towards Lago d'Orta and Val d'Ossola,
hugging the lake, and Verbania, Canton Ticino. After Feriolo the lake shore settles
because of the wide mouth of the river Toce, one of the major affluent of
Lago Maggiore. In the plain, there are many camp site facilities.
