Tourism Information Tel. Brissago
is on the right shore of the Ticinese gulf. The built up area,
situated on the shore, is the lower administrative district in
Switzerland: 196 metres from the sea level, the villages
stretch out over panoramic terraces, 400 metres height.
Lake and hill offer many amusements, confirming the tourist
vocation of the village. Here the Brissago cigars are made.
It is worth visiting: the church "Madonna del Ponte", built in
1526; the parish church; Palazzo Branca; and the new promenade
along the lake. In summer there is the "Festival Leoncavallo",
with international musicians and singers, in memory of the master,
who stayed here. The botanical park of Brissago Islands,
which can be reached by ferry boat, offers a marvellous variety
of local flora. The mild climate favours growth and development
of subtropical plants, near the spontaneous ones belonging to
the region. The plants are gathered together according to their
place of origin, and so the tourist has got the impression of
being in different continents.
On the Great Island a neo-classic palace,
surrounded by a wide botanical garden, rich in exotic and rare
plants .
