The
development of Porto Valtravaglia has been
contrasting: while the country town has developed in front
of the lake, the little villages have remained as little groups
of scattered houses on the hills. These villages have  preserved
their historical and artistic events. Between 17th and 18th
century, Porto enriched itself with beautiful palaces, built by
nobility and upper middle class. The religious buildings are
very interesting. The most important buildings, dating back to 9th-10th
century, form the religious centre of Domo, where every year many
organ concerts carry out. It is worth visiting the romanesque  church
Santa Maria Assunta. The little jetty and the promenade delimited
by old houses are nice. Porto, already famous for its glassworks
industry, presents new commercial and craft realities. The prevailing
economic activity is tourism, Italian and foreign one, thanks to the lake
and hills, which guarantee a calm sojourn, a quiet contact with nature.
