Where
the lake becomes river, here is Sesto Calende, in the southern part of
Verbano. The town, commercial and industrial centre, is the heart of road
junctions to Pianura Padana and the passes of Sempione and Gottardo.
Monumental symbol of this vocation is the double iron bridge over
Ticino, built in 1868. The shores offer the tourist many
amusements and the welcome of a good restaurant. It is
worth visiting the "Badia di San Donato" , romanesque church (9th century)
with typical structures of the abbeys in Milan; you can reach it
following the road Taino, partly crossing the territory
of "Parco del Ticino". Then the S. Vincenzo Church, originally a Benedictine monastery, and today
in the open country. In the self zone there is an enormous rock, today national natural
monument: the "Sass de Preja Buia" . At present the
urbanistic plan of Sesto is completely changed and there are only two angular towers as witness of
the old "castrum de Sexto", a port protection. Not far from Sesto, the prehistoric traces
of Golasecca civilisation show the high level of beauty reached by
the community of the Iron Age, that no one has ever exceeded
from the tenth to the 5th century b.c.
