PARCO DEI LAGONI DI MERCURAGO

The park, established in 1980, extends over 444 hectares located along the southernmost end of Lake Maggiore but its most distinctive areas are those characterised by acquatic and palustrine flora and the woods which constitute the largest section in the park.
Chestnut and birch dominate while the undergrowth is characterised by hazelnut trees. Worth mentioning is the centuries-old tradition of breeding thoroughbred horses here and riding in the park is offered by the many riding stables located in the adjacent communities.
It is also possible to cycle over the 20 km of easily accessible paths and dirt roads that wind through the park. The Lagoni di Mercurago are also an important archaeological site.
Traces of a settlement of Neolithic Bronze Age lake-dwellers and artefacts dating to the 4th-5th century have been found on these shores.
