Today
the seat of the Town Council of Varese, Palace Estense was once the villa of a dealer, Tommaso Orrigoni, built in 1760, and then (1766)
the summer residence of the Duke of Modena
Francesco III d'Este, who during the second half of the eighteenth century became Lord of Varese and
Governor of Lombardy. The palace was re-designed by the architect Bianchi, with frescos and other decorations
according to local style of the times. The Hall of Honor (known as the Hall of Estense), with its huge fireplace
and the Italians gardens, today open to the public, were modeled after those of Schönbrunn in Vienna, and are
considered to be the most beautiful in the whole of Lombardy. The large pool in the square behind the palace is key
to the landscaping of this garden, with its relieves, walkways, paths, flower beds and lawns.
On the self hill an other park, English garden, that of Villa Mirabello, continuity
element with that of Palace Estense, also municipal property from 1949.
