Situated on a splendid gulf, Angera is appreciated and disputed for its position. Here during the centuries Borromeo diffused their culture. In fact, the family belongs to the famous Fortress of Angera
,
the monument the most important in Angera. The antique bell-tower of the castle is dated back to XII century; from here the sight of the lake and of the hinterland is a beautiful sight. In the Fortress, which had been turned into a residence by Borromeo, it is worth visiting the frescos, works of Lombardian painters in transition between romanesque and gothic, and the first Italian Doll Mausoleum , opened in 1988. More than 1.000 dolls are shown together with objects dealing with play and childhood. It is beautiful the tree-lined promenade of Angera, with the sight of a curious little island, 200 metres height from the lake, rich in vegetation, but uninhabited. At the end of the promenade there is the sanctuary of "Madonna di Riva" .
Begun in 1657, and never ended; in fact the facade is dated back to 1943. To visit also the Civic Museum with the finds of the Roman necropolis
discovered in Angera in 1971.
