RISERVA NATURALE DI FONDOTOCE
This area (Special
Natural Reserve), 360 ha. including the most important
cane-thicket on the Piedmontese shore of Lake Maggiore and strips
of riparian vegetation, was designated a Natural Reserve in 1990
to protect one of the last remaining intact reed thickets on the
western shores of Lake Maggiore. It covers an area of 361 hectares
and includes the mouth of the Toce River and a section of the
shores of the Borromeo Gulf.
The lacustrine character of the territory makes possible the
presence of distinctive bird life and flora, water chestnuts for
example which are found mostly along the canal connecting Lake
Mergozzo and Lake Maggiore.
While cycling through the park it is easy to come across nests of
migratory birds or discover hidden beaches and inlets.
